OFW Tips: Mga Dapat Gawin Pagkatapos ng Contract sa Abroad

For our Filipino Overseas Workers abroad, hardworking for more than a year has an ending process. Everyone deserves to have a complete rest from tiredness of working and exhausting problems in life. We need to work for us to survive but we also need to stop from working when we know it’s over.

Well, OFWs may stop from their labors if they retire or their contract would end. But if that might happen, what happens next to their future and their family?

Here are some tips you can follow if you want to stay in the Philippines for good when it happens. Always be in mind that a comfortable life is not that easy if we won’t be clever.

1. Pay all your existing debts.

It is normal for OFWs and their family to be engaged in a big amount of debt, especially for those newbie ones. They may apply for loans in order to pay their placement fee before going abroad but as much as possible, before or after going back to the Philippines, payback them all to avoid a big interest in the end.

2. Save money.

After paying all the debts you had, it is now also the time to save money. Saving is so much important because you don’t know the future might be so if possible put in the bank at least 20% of your salary and do not use it unless it is really an emergency.

3. Live within your means.

Try to control your splendor or any extravagance. You should have to limit spending too much. We know that Filipino are sometimes fun of collections and buying everything they want but you can’t be one of them if you just only know how to resist.

4. Start a business as soon as possible.

Even while you are still working outside the country, you can do it so. Think of a business to put up and let your family manage it in your absent until you decide to stay in the Philippines.

Be a manager of your decisions. Bring effort to do what are necessary to help your lifestyle be better after working for many years. Think more than twice and wise.

How To Renew Your Philippine Passport While Abroad?

Can I renew my Philippine Passport while I am in abroad? How long does it take to renew it? What are then the requirements? These are just some of the queries that a traveler may know about the actions to be taken. If you are one of them, focus your eyes on reading.

According to the new law signed by our dear president, the Philippine passport will now be valid for 10 years from its previous 5 years of validity. The Republic Act # 10928 that amends the Sec. 10 of RA no. 8239 or the Philippine Passport Act of 1966, states that those regular passports issued under this act shall be valid for a span of 10 years. However,  those passports which were also issued under the old law will only be valid for 5 years.

In addition, those carriers of passports below 18 years of age will be only issued valid for only 5 years and passport validity of less than 10 years may be issued whenever in the National economic interest or political stability of the country such restriction is necessary.

How about now those Filipino travelers who are in abroad especially OFWs who are about to expire their passports? Do they need to return in our country just to renew their passports? The answer is NO.

Once a Philippine Passport will expire and the holder is outside the country, they have a 1 year renewal period to process their passports. The best part then is that, even in their working place (outside the Philippines), they can now renew it.  What they just to submit are the documents to prove their identification and legality. It includes the following:

  •  the latest passport you had
  • accomplished passport application form from the country you are in, be sure that it is printed in blue or black ink only.
  • any proof that the applicant can provide that would say he/she has not applied for foreign citizenship, e. g.  resident alien card (green card)
  • self-addressed return envelope, with appropriate stamps for express or priority mail with tracking nos.  Via US postal service; or with prepaid mailing envelope from private courier of choice if passports is to be mailed back.
  • passport  fee of $60.00 (non-refundable), payable in cash,  or money order,  bank draft,  certified check or cashier's check made payable to "Embassy of the Philippines" (or "Philippines Consulate General; " if application is made at one of the Philippine Consulates General in the U. S). Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted."
  • at least one (1) photocopy of each of the data page/s of the passport; (pages 1-3 for the brown passport or page 1 for the green passport)
  • photocopy of any valid identification card where the middle name is fully spelled out: (State ID,  driver's license,  birth certificate, marriage certificate, or baptismal certificate (if applicant's passport is the brown one)

Note that these following documents are required in the U.S. A renewal of Philippine Passports only.  Firstly, you may ask the country your residing by this time if you need to prepare them.  There might be documents which were added or lessened so be sure to check.

The process of renewing the said passport is by visiting the Phil.  Embassy in your host country and submit the documents to the consulate general. He will be the one in charge in notifying the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila about it and it will take approximately 8 weeks for your passport to be process completely.

If your option is to personally claim your passport, you can't include the 4th requirements  from the list above.  However, if you're not around in the deadline time to claim your passport, you can assign somebody to get it in the Philippine Embassy. He/she must only present the authorisation letter signed by you,  your old passport, your valid ID photo,  and valid ID of the claimee as well.

OFW MUST READ: Things That Should Prepare Before Going Home

The life of being an OFW is not that so easy. The scenario that you are far from your family is like the feeling that you are in the outside world. As a parent, you need to sacrifice more for your family. You need to look for a job where it can sustain their needs and save big earnings for your children’s future but from your first day abroad, you need to already strictly set your plan if when will you turn back in the Philippines and how long will you stay in your workplace?

As stated by a successful businessman who is a 0FW before, ‘’It is a long range plan so OFWs must have their own plan too. And the plan must start with increase capacity to reduce expenses by himself at the job site and his family, they augment with increased effort to save monthly’’. This is the one reason why most OFW fail. They thought that working in abroad is everlasting so they really enjoy the benefits of earning. Later when they realize this fact, they are out of time to catch up. They ended up going home without savings, money or any. Before thinking of going home in your country, you must consider a lot of things.

When you realize that it is now your perfect time to leave your work abroad, make sure that you already have enough money for your daily life in your country with your family. You must be practical in all aspects thinking that you would not want to go home with a budget that will last for only a month. Make sure that you can continue to support and provide the needs of those people who depend on you. Try to consider for any alternative business or job in your country. You need to take a rest after years of tiring work abroad buy o need to have a continuous source of income for your family.

As your time goes by working in another country, you also need to apply for any medical or health insurance where you can cover your family as your beneficiaries. Even though you can’t use it abroad but time will come, you and your family will be benefited to them in the future. It will help you to lessen your expenses, also try to apply to other insurance that will really help you a lot in time of emergency.

Think wise and more than twice. The hard life of being an Overseas Filipino Worker is really aching. They left their family in the Philippines, let their children grew up without their proper guidance and protection. They choose to embrace to work alone and depart from their love ones so as an OFW, you should be vigilant in planning and saving your earnings. Soon, you will come back to your original life you left in the Philippines without anything that will bother you. There are no regretful things to ponder of because you believe that you had made the best and right decisions.

100,000 Jobs soon to Open in Japan

There are new great opportunities be given to our Filipino Citizens in the near short period of days. As reported in 24 Oras, GMA News Reporter JP Soriano reported last Friday, there are over 100,000 jobs will be open soon in Japan for Filipino and other foreign workers.

One of the good news disclosed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the Department of Labor and Employment, Filipino workers may be given the priority to be hired once Japan will start their hiring. ‘’ Japan’s Ministry of Health and Labor would soon open their market for Filipino skilled and semi-skilled workers under the Technical Intern Training Program’’ Bernard Olalia, POEA officer-in-charge reported. At present, officials from both countries are drafting the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the program, he added.

"Kapag ito napirmahan na, ‘yung MOU, magdeploy tayo  ng mga professional semi-skilled workers under this new framework. Under this new track magde-deploy tayo for private institutions,’’ Ollalia said.

As to the report, our Filipino workers who are in South Korea right now facing the crisis because of tensions involving North Korea will also be given the chance and be benefited from the possible job openings.

DOLE, OWWA, and POEA are working together to prepare for any eventual repatriation for our OFWs which will include reintegration program, ‘’ said Labor Sec. Silvestre Bello III in the report. The report also added that although there are no job orders, interested Filipino workers are encouraged to visit regularly the POEA websites for any updates.

From a great source, in present, Japan is in need of skilled works who are often directly hired and while others are hired through recruitment agencies which are accredited under the POEA.  Japan is also looking for household service workers ‘’ kasambahay’’, drivers, English teachers, and even entertainers.

The country is giving a high salary compared to our country. They are also hiring drivers who are not even College graduate as long as they can speak English. Filipinos who are planning to work in Japan will also no longer experiencing the strict requirements and application process of the said country because they already issued multiple entry visas for Pinoy tourists.
